Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
It was fun to read NOTHING LASTS FOREVER and compare it to the movie that came of it. Once you get past the different protagonist name and some changed settings and characters, it’s a good read by itself, though in this case, I prefer the storyline of the movie rather than the book. The action is non-stop, and I appreciate that the book starts off in St. Louis (does the movie? I can’t remember), my hometown. There are certainly parts of the book that are dated, but the book still resonates when it talks about terrorists abroad. I’m not sure the book’s terrorists’ motives are clear, though they are clearly the bad guys. Did anyone else have cognitive dissonance with Tony the Red (aka Hans) Gruber’s name, one part Italian and one part German? This original Gruber can’t hold a candle to Alan Rickman’s portrayal in the movie. I’m glad I had a chance to read this thriller, and folks who enjoy the action genre will appreciate it. Just be aware that with each scene you’re probably going to be trying to do a page-to-screen comparison!
Side note: some of the author’s notes and the first chapter of the book that brought us DIE HARD 2 are included; I had no idea the first two movies were based on books! The credits of the fourth movie include an article source, but what about my favorite DH movie, #3? Is that based on a book too?
Received as a digital ARC via Netgalley and the publisher.
