The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World’s Great Drinks by Amy Stewart
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. The text is well-written and engaging, with everything from anecdotes about weird things plants can do in alcohol to easy-to-understand chemical reactions that make the things we drink so tasty. Why is there a worm in some tequila? Why is wheat a rather unusual plant to make beer from? Is vodka really Russian and always made from potatoes? Answers to these and many other questions can be found in THE DRUNKEN BOTANIST. Find out why absinthe turns cloudy when it’s prepared with cold water and the role of bugs in your plants, and thence into your alcohol. There’s a bit of history, brewcraft, survival tips… nearly every plant can be made into an alcoholic beverage or used in one, and this book offers a fascinating glimpse into that process.
I received this book as an e-ARC via Netgalley and the publisher.
