The Night Is Watching by Heather Graham
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I enjoy the Krewe of Hunters novels, though they require me to take my analysis hat off. This one was a fun story set in a ghost town struggling to survive in modern times, so there was plenty of Old West flair. There’s a skull found deep in the backstage depths of an old-time theater, so we get to see Jane and her artistic talents on display. The author cares about her characters enough to make sure that we know they really do have the skills they talk about. It was nice to see a softer side of the Krewe with Jane. Of course there is some conflict between the main characters (this wouldn’t be a Harlequin mystery without it) and of course they fall wildly in love and they solve the crime(s) together. I didn’t really expect the bad guy here, so the ending was a little flat for me. The climactic action comes in one big bunch at the end, but the rest of the story is a good paranormal mystery, with Jane receiving help from the town’s resident ghosts (yep, it really is a ghost town!). The Krewe novels don’t need to be read in order, so if you’re in the mood for a little romantic ghost-story murder mystery, pick this up.
