Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A gritty, well-written debut novel! Full of imagery, this is a post-apocalyptic novel I wasn’t dreading to read (I’m not a dystopian fan), even if I was sad to hear that
my hometown of St. Louis didn’t make it through the big flood
. This came in my June PageHabit box, and it had been on my list for a while, so I was happy to open the box and find this! It’s a pretty quick read, and now I face the long wait for the next book. For all that I’ve been told I have Native American roots way, way back, I know very little about the culture or mythology, and this book introduced some really interesting characters drawing on that culture. I do wish there was a pronunciation guide somewhere, because I know the way I’m saying the names in my head isn’t right. Also, I’d like to see a map of the land that is left (though the city names give me a good idea). This is a good mix of mythological magic and broken characters trying to find their way in an unforgiving world.
