I don’t usually read YA books without any fantasy in them, because they don’t seem to have that spark I’m looking for. Golden, however, really pulled me in, and I enjoyed the mystery. The characters are all real and easy to relate to, and I felt like I understood their motivations. The book doesn’t end the way you expect; not everything is happiness and rainbows, but that’s reality, isn’t it? That’s not to say the ending isn’t good. It’s true to life without being depressing. I loved the imagery and the use of poetry and the moral debates, and I especially felt for Parker and her constant need to measure up to her mother’s high standards. This book made me think about the what-ifs in my life. Even though this is fiction, Parker goes through changes here, and it’s comforting to read about the good those changes can bring, even if they’re sometimes painful. Pick this one up if you’re looking for a nice, quick read for teens questioning their path in life.<\/p>\n
