Q: Why are cats similar to sentences?
A: A cat has claws at the end of its paws; a sentence has pause at the end of its clause.
There are several foreign post-docs in the lab I work at, and one of them is Japanese. So occasionally we’ll get Japanese phrases thrown at us and sometimes we remember them. But apparently one of the reasons it’s so hard for Japanese people to learn english is because ‘talk like Yoda, they do.’ They have a different order of the nouns and verbs, so our order takes a little getting used to. Huh. Chinese is probably the same way, though I have no idea and could totally be pulling that out of my ass, since I’ve never mustered up enough motivation to actually attend a chinese class. One of these days. It’s on my to-do list.
Actually, Chinese has the same word order as English. At least, that’s what I’ve heard. I think it’s just the accents and intonations and writing that’s difficult to get used to.
