Luigi suggested I look into medical school. So I did. It sure would be nice to say “Hi. I’m Dr. Shew” someday (although I always thought that sounded sort of strange). When I was little I was sure I was gonn amake it to the highest degree I could. I never knew how much work it would be.
And then we come to the main reason I didn’t apply to medical school: I did not take any organic chemistry classes. I was so thankful that orgo wasn’t required for biomedical engineering students…and honestly I don’t know where I would have fit it in. But I believe every medical school out there requires it for admission. And a year (or 8 credits) no less…which means I couldn’t even get it over with in a summer. I knew I should have taken a class this fall…although I don’t know if orgo was available in the evenings. meh.
It’s not like I would have to get it done as soon as possible…I won’t even be applying until next fall if even that soon. But I find it extremely ironic that the class I was so glad I didn’t have to take may now keep me from trying for med school. Because honestly, med school is looking much more attractive than grad school. I don’t know if I can see myself as a PhD. You make more money as a doctor anyway…and less of a chance of having to write a thesis. That thesis part really scares me.
As does the thought of all the memorization that’s required in both orgo and med school. I wonder if I’d be like the med students on ‘er’ who go gangbusters for a while then drop off the show because they couldn’t hack it. Yep, scared of the future. Why do you think I procrastinate so much? I’m futurephobic.
Sigh. Anyone out there take orgo? Any hints or tips? The word just scares me too. I’m a wimp when I think about going back to school.
random thought: I was always one of the young ones in school because of where my birthday fell. But if I go back to school now I’ll be one of the old ones. Hmm.

I know what I want in my basement
StandardPinball News – First and Free
They’re gonna make a LotR pinball machine! How cool would that be? Can’t you just imagine having that in your basement? lol. I would spend hours in front of the thing. Just look at the descriptioin! Whee!
Cryptonomicon is a really good book. Even if it is indirectly about math.
Call me crazy, but…
StandardI really want these. Yes, I know they’re daggers, yes I know they’re replicas of a fictional character’s weapons, yes I realize they’re expensive. However, I’m most likely not going to buy them unless I somehow come into a lot of money (unlikely) so you can all breathe a sigh of relief. This place also sells a somewhat movie-similar Galadhrim bow, which would also be cool. Sigh. Computer first. Make money. Then cool stuff. I hate waiting.
Luigi told me he thinks I should go to med school. Let’s hope that my grades could hold up with nice recommendtions with the boss. Also said I should get a raise next month, as they’re very happy with me and I’ll have been there for six months. whoo!

Leo will either love me or hate me. Not sure which. But Alex pronounced it good, and I must concur. Have a laugh.
Viggo, have a great birthday
StandardViggo Mortensen (aka Aragorn) is 45 today. Rock on with your bad self!
TheOneRing.net | Lord of the Rings Movie News and Rumors has a Trilogy Tuesday Aftermath report. Seems like there are a heckuva lot of disappointed fans about not being able to get tickets. Sigh. I’m still debating whether I should go ahead and buy tickets for the Ronnie’s midnight premiere (we know they’re having one) or wait and see if the Esquire is going to show a premiere again. Meh. And I want to see the extended editions of FotR and TTT in the theater if I can…but I guess I can settle for the DVD versions…ah well. Obsessions can suck, I suppose.
People ask the oddest things
StandardHere are some answers to some pretty random questions people ask using the handy-dandy ‘ask me anything’ button above. Of course, for every question asked, I get at least two ‘nothing’ emails, where people just hit the button for fun, I suppose. Anyway, your burning questions answered:
Q: Do you have a girl friend? A: Well. I have several friends that are girls. But apparently this blog sounds masculine (there’s a post about this program that analyses writing samples to see if they were written by a man or woman, and it’s right 80% of the time. I’m part of the 20% it got wrong
) so this person got the wrong idea. I am most certainly looking for a member of the opposite sex. (read: a guy!)
Q: What is Legolas Day? A: Coming up, actually: October 25. Legolas Day is a silly unofficial holiday perpetuated by the Arrows (Orlando Bloom/Legolas lovers on FanForum) in remembrance of the day we are introduced to Legolas in the Fellowship of the Ring book.
Q: What’s the element of evil in charles dickens in tale of two cities? A: Hah. I actually did a book report on ToTC in high school, but damned if I know this. The book report was figuring out who would play the characters in the book if Hollywood made a movie out of it. Yeah. I chose Mel Gibson and Pierce Brosnan. I was going though a Braveheart/Scottish phase. Go ahead, have a laugh on me.
Q: what were the most popular sports of 1941? A: Do I look like an almanac? Yes, I know it says ask me anything, but did anything on this site give the impression that I’m a history buff? I have absolutely no idea.
Q: Did you finish the brooch? Can I see it? A: Yes, the elven brooch is finished and has been since the week before Comic-Con. There’s really nothing to see though…it looks like the brooch from the Noble Collection, just a little cheaper and not so spiffily enamelled. Perhaps someday I’ll be able to scan in pics of the costume. We’ll see. Maybe when I go home to get the costume for Halloween.
Did you enjoy that? Yes? Well ask some more questions! I’ll see how sarcastic I can get.
Salut Alex & Leo!
This is a great site for aspiring writers. Yay! Maybe I should start writing more! Sigh. One of these days.

PromoGuy dot Net
Now, you must realize that even though this is Friday, this is still the Monday Mission. Promo had some troubles this week so this one is extrordinarily late and it’s not my fault.
1. Have you ever accidentally deleted something from your website or otherwise screwed it up? Share your tales of woe, won’t you? Well. A few weeks ago I somehow deleted all the files in the index directory…but not the directories in the index directory. So all my ‘spin-off’ sites were still there, but the index page and all the little incidental pages just went kaput. Have no idea what happened. Luckily I had an archive that was only a few weeks old and Greymatter nicely rebuilt the index page for me, so I didn’t lose any posts. I should make a new archive now that it’s the middle of october…so thank goodness this screw-up has a happy ending.
2. When was the last time you did a total backup of your website (including databases) to store offline? Do you have some sort of schedule set up? lol. Shows that I don’t read the questions before answering them. I think the last backup was at the beginning of october. I don’t know if I can back up my databases. I guess I should see about that, cause I would hate to have to reenter all my clique data, and gallery I believe uses the database as well…hmm. thank you for pointing that out.
3. If your entire site was deleted, and there was no way to restore it, what would you do? Would you start over? Give up? How would it impact your life? I would be quite peeved. It might give me a chance to move to a different hosting service that’s based in America (long story 😉 ) but I’ve got quite a lot of the site saved elsewhere so I’d be able to put most of it back up. Sure I’d be disappointed about the stuff I lost, but most likely I wouldn’t even know what I’d lost…I’d just have that vague undefined feeling of loss. Life would go on. I would certainly make another site.
4. Not having a blog for several days gave me a lot of time to reflect on blogging. I asked myself some serious questions, now it is your turn. Just what do you hope to accomplish with your blog? Why are you doing it? To make the world a better place, to satisfy your own vanity or what? Is the time you spend blogging really “time well spent?” When I ramble about things blogging is not the best way to spend time. But I enjoy it. It gives me a way to indulge my love of writing and it lets me do a little html on the side. I like being able to tell people about my life, because it’s not like I have all that many people I can ‘talk ‘ to about it….so I just write it so anyone can read. My mom is worried that I’m putting too much of myself out there in the ether…but most of this would probably go into a book somehow anyway, it just wouldn’t have my face on it. I just want to know that someone cares. And it’s a way to have a site in website competition 😉
5. Do you think having your own web site/blog has changed you as a person? (For example, given you more confidence in yourself, enhanced your creativity, encouraged you to improve yourself, given you a flair for web design, etc.) Er. Not really. I mean, I love working on my websites. I guess I’ve improved significantly with those. I can type better 😉
6. One of the main reasons I get so much “comment spam’ is because I’ve allowed my site to be indexed by Google. One one hand it is great to come up high in the rankings on so many searches, but the drawback is I get a lot of comment trolls and comment spam (hmm, do trolls eat spam?). Do you let Google index your site? Do you often search certain topics on Google to see your rankings? What are some of the good and bad things about being listed in Google? I do let Google index my site, but apparently my keywords aren’t that interesting to searchers because I don’t get all that many hits from search engines. That’s ok. I don’t really want more spam. I’ve not gotten all that many hate comments, have had some weird karma voters, but no serious flamers. Yay.
7. I’ve often thought that I need a “Blog Buddy” and should start up a “Blog Buddy System” site. The idea is based on the same “Buddy System” every child is told about when they go on a field trip. Your Buddy looks out for you, you look out for them. You keep an eye on each other and if something goes wrong, you take charge and help. The “Blog Buddy System” is the same – every blogger has one other blogger who watches out for them. There is 100% total trust between the two. Each allows the other permissions to post on their blog. Each blog has a “Blog Buddy System” icon linking to each other’s site, so readers know who your Buddy is. If your Buddy doesn’t post for a few days or a week or whatever seems out of character, the Blog Buddy picks up the phone and calls them. There may have been an accident. A family emergency. Or, perish the thought, the death of the Buddy. The Blog Buddy is responsible for carrying out the wishes of their Buddy. Be it logging into the site to make announcements, keeping silent, or closing down their blog. Whatever has been agreed upon, but the Buddies watch out for each other. What do you think of the “Blog Buddy System” idea? Do you have a “Blog Buddy” in your life? Would you like one? Have you ever thought about what would happen to your site if you died and who would tell your readers? That’s a good idea, Promo. I guess that’s sort of how affiliates work…but without the super-trust. I’d love to have a blog buddy. Some people have posting permission on my blog but they don’t use it…you people should take up the offer again!
BONUS: If you hide away from me how can our love grow? I don’t think I’m the one hiding. Where are you?
