This or That

1. Go out and buy gifts, or shop online/mail order? Both.

2. Gift cards/certificates or pick out gifts? Try to pick them out. Not always successful.

3. Pay cash or charge holiday gifts? Debit card! I have no credit card.

4. Are most of your gifts mailed or given in person? In person. I don’t know too many people I’d have to send it to, aside from my cousin inJoplin…

5. Are you an early-bird or last-minute holiday shopper? Usually later cause it’s hard to get to the stores.

6. If you shop in stores…big chain stores or smaller specialty stores? Umm…the mall?

7. Wrap gifts yourself or have them wrapped at the store or mall? Wrap them myself. Why should you pay someone to do it when it makes Christmas Eve so much more fun?

8. Shopping on *Black Friday* (day after Thanksgiving)…did you or didn’t you? Hell no. No way I’m getting up that early. Besides, I’m at my grandparents farm which makes it difficult to go shopping for anything.

9. Is your holiday gift list large or small? Small. Just family and a very few close friends.

10. Is it better to give or to receive? Well, I could be altruistic and say to give, but I really do like getting presents 🙂

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know,

His house is in the village though.

He will not see me stopping here,

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer,

To stop without a farmhouse near,

Between the woods and frozen lake,

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake,

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep,

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

— Robert Frost

and…

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveller, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could.

To where it bent in the undergrowth,

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear,

Though as for that, the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

PromoGuy’s Monday Mission 2.48

1. Suppose God (or your deity of choice) grants you one miracle. Consider

the world in which we live. Consider your life and family. What would you

request for this miracle? Are you sure that is the best way to use it? You only

get one.
Egad. I have no idea. Probably something like an end to hunger or no more wars, or religious harmony. A greedy miracle would be to win the lottery. Well, not totally greedy cause I would buy my parents a new house with a greenhouse and a basketball court. And a studio. Can’t forget the studio.

2. I believe that prayers do get answered, but I realize not everyone

agrees. Have you ever had an experience where you truly believe your prayer

was answered? If you don’t believe in such things, how come? What is your

philosophy on prayer?
I know He answered my prayers during last track season. He helped me get through college when I wasn’t sure I could, so there’s another. I haven’t gotten fired yet, so that’s a good sign. And my parents aren’t divorced or separated which is the best of all.

3. Have you ever lost a pet? That is, have you ever had a pet get

loose, run away or be stolen? Did you get it back? How did the loss impact your

life?
I never ‘lost’ a pet, I never had a cat or dog to run away, but I did have some die on me…I was so sad when my rabbit, Tipps, died when I was, oh, eight…I can still see her sitting in that cardboard box, waiting to be buried. And my hampster, Ruby, died when I was on vacation, and was stored in my uncle’s freezer till we got back. Alas. The little ones are never with us long.

4. Getting together with family at the holidays is great, I just love

it. Most of all I love the food. What is your favorite holiday food? Eek…stuffing? the real mashed potatoes? Turkey? cakes and pies? crab dip? I can’t choose!

5. One thing I’ve noticed about the holidays is that no one makes

Pumpkin Pie like my Grandmother. She has totally spoiled me on her recipe, I

just don’t like the taste of anyone else’s Pumpkin Pie. Are there are dishes

or desserts that someone in your family fixes better than anyone else?
Our family makes the best chicken and dumplings. It’s my grandma’s recipie, but my mom and my dad also make it, and everyone makes it differently, but damn good. And my dad makes the best egg rolls and crab rangoon. We always have to bug him to make them, but when he finally does, they are si bon…

6. Since I have no brothers or sisters, I am always wondering what it

would have been like. Now that I am older, it kinda stinks that I will never be

an Uncle. Do you have any siblings with children? How does it make you feel

to be an Aunt or an Uncle? If not, would you like to be have nieces and nephews?

Would you make a good relative to them?
I’m an only, and I know there were times when I wish I had a playmate when I was littler, or someone to talk to during hs that wasn’t one of my parents. I do feel sad that I’ll never be an aunt, unless my husband has sibs…I hope so. I love my aunts and uncles. And cousins! I want my kids to have cousins! So, boys with sibs, contact me! lol.

7. I am putting together a CD of great holiday music. Do you have any

suggestions of what songs (title/artist) I should include?
Amy Grant’s ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.’ Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You.’ Celine Dion & Andrea Bocelli, ‘The Prayer.’ Kenny Rogers Christmas album (don’t laugh). There’s more but my Christmas collection isn’t in front of me right now.

BONUS: How would you feel knowin’ prejudice was obsolete and all

mankind danced to the same beat? Wouldn’t that be the sweetest thing?

Thanksgiving etcetera

Thanksgiving was good. LOTS of food. We were eating most of the time. Early mornings though. Almost worth it with the oatmeal. And the stuffing was good as always.
I shot my grandpa’s hunting bow for a bit. I started off kind of wobbly…those compound bows are nothing to be scoffed at. I don’t know how much poundage it took, but there was this cute little puller gizmo that saved your hands and made the release much smoother. I did manage to kill the pig in the first three shots, but I got better smile Mom said I was channeling Legolas. I laughed. It was embarrassing.
Thanksgiving day was Grandma’s 75th birthday. And she’s still very pretty. My uncle and aunt made a powerpoint presentation of memories of and feelings about her. It wasn’t as sappy as it could have been. Did you know she wants to be an astronaut when she grows up? smile
Started a pattern for the silver frock. Luckily Grandma is a really good seamstress and she had some muslin so we didn’t go about cutting into (and most likely screwing up) the pretty dupioni silk. Learned some nice things about sewing that will be put into good use, eventually.
Corey said she might be able to make the buckles for me, and the closures. I’d just have to pay for the silver. Or nickel. Or something. And Grandpa gave me an antler for the long knives. I’m much closer now smile course, I’d have to figure out how to make the knives…somehow I don’t think they’d like it if I brought actual long knives into the convention…or live arrows…hmm.
Watched the Very Merry Muppets Christmas. Cute. You can never go wrong with the Muppets. Kermit is still the cutest frog.
Alex says I have to wait till Tuesday to see if the theater we want to see TTT at will have a midnight premiere. Well gosh darnit they better! I want my TTT! lol. Not obsessed. See, my coworker is leaving for Slovakia (christmas break, you know) on the 18th, so we *have* to see it at midnight so she has time to pack before her flight smile
I feel like there’s more I wanted to say but I can’t remember it. I’ll try to have a sneak at Chapter Five of TMC up when I get to work. No promises, and it will be in caldir so you’d have to let me know if you want to read it.
Back into the semi-bigtime at the WQ, so please remember to vote for me this week…link is just after the post. Thanks!

Also known widely as the Fire Bird, the phoenix is a profound symbol of the circle of life. It has a life cycle of 500 to 600 ears and after that amount of time, it sets itself on fire and dies in the flames. Then after three days, it rises again from the ashes. It is a completely benign creature who lives in dew. It is said that the phoenix has a beautiful melidous song which grows ever more mournful as its life comes to an end. It is a symbol of the sun and immortality. The phoenix is a very worthwhile beast.

OK, ‘fess up: how many times did you see FOTR? Do you think you’ll see TTT as many, more, or fewer times? Have you made any special plans regarding the movie’s opening?
I saw FotR seven times during its theatrical run. Six times in the theater and once on a computer (shh don’t tell!) I saw the seventh in March specifically for the fan preview tacked onto the end. I will probably see TTT at least three times, being that I’ve got two free tickets and I’m going to see the midnight premiere again. If they offer it. Still haven’t gotten tickets for that yet, grr. No real special plans for the TTT premiere other than seeing the midnight showing. We’ll probably get there about two hours early. I bet it will be more crowded than last year, but I got there an hour early last time and there was hardly anyone there. We’ll see. I can’t wait! 21 days!
I can’t really see myself seeing TTT as many times as FotR, but I haven’t seen how much Legolas is in it smile hot elf, anyone? lol.
