PromoGuy’s Monday Mission 3.06
1. In the states, every citizen is expected to perform their civic duty and serve on a jury at some point. This week, I am on jury duty. Have you ever had to serve on a jury? Not yet. My dad just did. I’ll probably have to sometime soon.
2. If you were to ever serve on a jury, would you be able to give someone the death penalty? I honestly don’t know. I’d probably be a wimp and go along with majority opinion if I could figure out what it was. I think I’m in favor of it for certain reasons, grisly murder, raping serial killer, etc, but I’d really have to be in the situation to give a definitive answer.
3. One thing that concerns me about jury duty is what my life would be like if I had to convict someone. I’d always be worried about some sort of retaliation from the convict, or their family. Has fear of negative consequences ever kept you from reporting a crime or voicing your opinion? Probably. I don’t think I’ve ever been witness to an actual crime, something that deserved persecution, and I don’t think that the Mob is after me…If I knew the person was guilty I’m pretty sure I’d be able to convict.
4. When it comes to convictions, I’ve never even been convicted of speeding (accused yes, but heh, never convicted). Have you ever been accused of or convicted for breaking any laws? What’s the real story there? I almost got a traffic ticket. Got caught by the cop behind me (who I couldn’t see cause it was dark) running a red light. The closest place to pull over was right in front of an Applebee’s so I was mortified that all these people’s dinners were getting interrupted cause of the flashing red & blue lights. I was so embarrassed. I thought for sure he was gonna give me a ticket and I’d have to go to court and my parents would be so pissed. Turns out he didn’t, he just gave me a warning, thank the Lord. So I officially have nothing on my licence. Whew!
5. It looks like I will have a lot of time on my hands this week in the jury pool. I may get called, I may not. If not, I go back tomorrow. Rinse, wash, repeat. How would you pass the time if you had to sit and wait around from 8am-5pm for 5 days? Probably the same thing I do when I’m bored at lab meeting…doodle and think up new words for my novel. Maybe write a bit. I think I’d have a hard time with jury duty cause I tend to drift off and not pay attention to what’s being said cause I’m so into drawing or writing. eeg. Cross that bridge when I come to it, I suppose. That and the tendency I have to doze when I’m the slightest bit bored…
6. One thing I do like about this “civic duty” is that it will be at the downtown courthouse. I LOVE downtown. There is just so much life there. What part of your town is your favorite to visit? Why? What makes it so special? I don’t really have a favorite part of the city right now. I guess it could be the Loop or maybe downtown, but to tell you the truth, as a lifetime St Louis resident, I don’t know that much about the city. I spent most of my time pretty isular in Affton, and then in the Wash U bubble…
7. I’m not that outgoing around strangers, so I doubt I will be meeting many new people this week. Do you have any problems striking up a conversation with someone you don’t know? Have chance encounters with strangers ever led to interesting new relationships or opportunities? Always have trouble talking to strangers. Even when I’m talking on the phone. I hate the phone. I suppose some of the people I’ve met through school, track, etc, those turned out well, but on the whole I’m not the kind of person who can go up to someone and introduce myself. I’m much more comfortable being introduced…
BONUS: So if I tell you that you’re really something baby, will you stay or will you go away ? I’d probably stay cause not too many people tell me that.
