  1. Our region just keeps getting bigger. We had pretty decent attendance at our regularly scheduled write-ins, but we’re spreading out a little this year and doing more pre-NaNo workshops. We may get more people or not, I have no idea. And magically we had participation from seven library branches, so we’ll see how that affects things. Crazy planning all that–and we managed to get it done in August! We’ve got a few write-ins in South County this year, I wonder if that would be too far away for you guys to visit?

  3. I’m ML-ing this year and am going to focus on rebuilding this region. One problem with SoIL is that it is basically the lower half of the state.  We are so spread out.

Could you tell me what kind of program you do with libraries?

  5. The library thing is new this year. One of our regional participants works for one of the branches and got the ball rolling with the County Library. She contacted a few of her fellow librarians around town late July/early August to see if they’d be interested in having programming. Last year we did a few pre-NaNo workshops (what is NaNo? How do I write a novel in 30 days? Am I crazy if I do this? that sort of thing. A q&a session with tips and tricks) and we had a good turnout–I think it helped some people who were on the fence or didn’t really know what it was about. This year, a few more libraries are doing the workshops, and some others simply scheduled a write-in or two during November. It’s great that they scheduled them on their own, because as actual library programming, no one has to pay for the space. I was so glad that the library reached out to us, since I had no idea their lead time was so long (some of the branches could only do November stuff because their October was already scheduled in August!), and we’ve been wary of self-scheduled library write-ins since you have to rent them. But we’re even having our writing marathon at a library this year, and for free, because of this new relationship.

tl;dr: talk to libraries early, and most of them are glad to get involved.

  7. I got a fuzzy idea of what I’m doing. I really need to figure out how I want to end things.

Anthony, do you do write ins online? My region (Naperville-IL) has an online channel that meets nearly every night for word wars (one of our MLs wrote a script to run them) and chat. We also have some charts in our nano forum of everyone’s word count so it’s easy to compete with others in your region even when you can’t meet face to face.

  9. Our region does do weekly write-ins.  We usually have three a week spread out across the region, from Alton to Carbondale. (That’s a 2 1/2 hr drive!)  This year I’ll be supplementing with Google Hangouts and seeing how it works.
