Go to the other blog for news about the job.
Now it’s time for the This or That
1. Large or small family? Medium.
2. Potato chips or pretzels? Potato chips.
3. House or apartment? Apartment till I get enough to buy a house…many many years from now.
4. Zebras or giraffes? Giraffes.
5. Candles or potpourri? Candles.
6. Flowers or trees? Flowers. Trees. Nature.
7. Right or left-handed? Right. although lefties are cool, if inconvenienced.
8. Model trains or dolls/stuffed animals? Stuffed animals.
9. Comedy or drama? Dramatic comedy.
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: The city of Boston has recently banned smoking in all restaurants and bars. Would you want to see such a law passed in your city/town/country, or not? Hell yes. Smoking is bad, and it stinks. How could you subject your food to that?
So I saw the Matrix Reloaded on saturday…yay! What a cool movie. Now you might have heard how it’s somewhat lacking in plot and other things of that nature. EW gave it a B, but the local paper only gave it 2 1/2 stars. Personally, I don’t pay too much attention to reviews. If I want to see a movie I see it, reviews be damned. And I definitely wanted to see this one. It sort of popped up on me unexpectedly; I was a little more interested in Pirates and of course Return of the King, which as you can see in the sidebar are quite a ways away. But then I finally saw the trailer for Matrix in front of X-Men 2 and I just got all hyped up. So. I was peeved that I couldn’t see it opening night, but at least I got to see it
I think it definitely rates a second viewing. If I can get my parents to the theater, I think we’ll see it…
So. My impression. Seemed a little long-winded at times. I couldn’t understand the french guy all the time when he spoke (tut tut, there goes my six years of french classes). The pep-talk/rave/sex scene was indeed sexy, if a bit drawn out. Arm plugs, ew. Too much vinyl on Trinity. I want a coat like Neo’s (as well as his sunglasses). Missed some of the computer/programming logic conversations. Liked the tv screens when he’s talking to the Architect. Like the Twins. I wonder if they come back? There is no spoon.
But it’s time to leave, so maybe I’ll get back to you after I go do my Superman thing. ![]()
Ok. So I’ve officially survived week one of my new job and am moving on with the second. Thank the Lord God Almighty that I at least have a job. I need to remember to sign my health insurance forms, find my chemistry book, and bring in an ethernet cord. Who says you never use stuff you had in college?
So…this job is also at Wash U Sch of Med, much to the chagrin of the unemployment office, but a different lab. Totally different department. No more stem cells…well, maybe. We’ll see. I might work with them here. I know I still want to work in tissue engineering, but this job could be a means to an end. My boss, Dr Fontana (Luigi) nicely hinted to me that if his boss likes me there’s the possibility of an MD/PhD program down the road. Hmm. Dr Shew, eh? lol. The timesheets say Applied Physiology department, but my id says Geriatrics, Div of Medicine. Go fig. I’m actually doing something with the blood serum of calorie-restricted human volunteers, trying to help Luigi find out what it is about these people’s sera that makes them less prone to cancer and perhaps live longer. Could be cool, no? One of these days I’ll actually learn this fancy ELISA procedure (enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay) to determine what antibodies are in the serum…I think…don’t ask me to explain yet cause I’m not so sure about it anyway!
I’ve been isolating PBMCs and aliquoting sera, learning some ins and outs of the lab…I don’t think I have everybody’s name down yet, but at least they all smile at me…
The family is thinking of getting a new car. A Toyota Sienna, to be more precise. Ok, so it’s not really a car. But it is silver, which, after green, blue, and maroon, is my favorite color! ha. Too bad we can’t get the superduper deluxe version which has a rearseat dvd player. Ah well. I’ll just have to get a new computer, with dvd drive…pet peeve: why don’t dvd makers make the extras viewable on macs? I don’t understand why that would be so hard. Silly people. You don’t like the artists! ah well.
hold your horses, there’s more coming soon!
I swear I’ll get to telling you about my first week of work soon. In the meantime, here’s…
PromoGuy’s Monday Mission 3.20
1. This seems to be the year for movie sequels (Terminator 3, Matrix Reloaded, 2 Fast 2 Furious, LOTR: The Return of the King, etc.). Is there a movie you would like to see Hollywood make a sequel to? Probably. But right now all I can think of is books that I’d like to see made into movies…see question 3 🙂
2. What movie sequel do you think should never have been made? er. Speed 2…because I never saw it.
3. Are there any books (comic, novel, etc.) that you would like to see made into a movie? Who should star in it? Starring, I have no idea. But I’d love to see the Elizabeth Haydon books as movies, or the Anita Blake books…and the Forever King. I’m sure there’s more but I’m at work so it’s a little hard to imagine my bookshelf.
4. When was the last time the you got a shot at the Doctor’s office? Do you prefer them in the arm or your backside? Or would you rather just take a prescription? An actual shot as in vaccine I’m not sure. But TB test was last year…arm is fine. I’m not squeamish about getting shots, just if I’d have to give them…eh.
5. Do you make friends easier in “Real Life” or online or is it about the same? Do you have closer friendships in “Real Life” or online? Why do you think that is? Are you ok with that or would you like to make a change? I probably have more friends online, and some of them are definitely closer friendships than I have offline. I think this is just because the entire reason for getting together was a common interest, while real life friends are sometimes thrown together and they end up liking each other. I’d love to have more real life friends, if only to do something with on a weekend. As it is I’d have to go pretty far out of state to find any of my online buds…
6. When you first got your drivers license how did you feel ? Did you get it on the first try, second, third, more than that ? Do you have a license ? If no, do you plan to get one ? Why or why not ? I have one, I got it two months before I turned 17 (thankfully before the graduated licence law). I like being able to drive but I don’t like having to pay for insurance which I’ll have to do shortly when we get a new car. I’d rather bike, all things considered, but then you don’t look very nice at work.
7. Have you ever had your tonsils removed? Did you ever come close? Tell me about that. No, not even close.
BONUS: Who’s that girl? Is it the new summer student? I don’t know what her name is yet…
The Friday Five
1. What drinking water do you prefer — tap, bottle, purifier, etc.? Tap. It’s cheaper.
2. What are your favourite flavor of chips? usually something with cheese, but I’ve been known to scarf lots of barbeque chips, which is odd, cause I don’t really like actual barbequed meat.
3. Of all the things you can cook, what dish do you like the most? the good ole standby, spaghetti with meat sauce.
4. How do you have your eggs? usually scrambled, sometimes in a ham and cheese omlette, sometimes over-easy…then chopped up into little pieces so I can use the yolk as a sausage-dipping sauce.
5. Who was the last person who cooked you a meal? How did it turn out? Dad cooked, as usual…he’s a great natural cook, he never needs recipies, and he always knows just what to do with that piece of meat.
This or That
1. Packrat or minimalist? Total packrat.
2. Computer: desktop or laptop? Laptop, unless I’m at home where the only internet enabled comp is the desktop…
3. Seashore or mountains? mountains.
4. Carpeting or bare floors? Carpet. Or rugs on hardwood.
5. Drinking water: bottled or tap? Tap…I’m too cheap to buy bottled.
6. Shopping websites: eBay or Amazon? Amazon.
7. Cute little kitties or big scary tigers? Tigers…when they’re kittens 😉
8. Front door or back door? Front door. The back’s always locked.
9. Lots of jewelry, or little/none? Little.
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: At the last minute, you obtain tickets to an event you’re dying to attend. However, you have to work that day! Do you ask the boss for the time off, or just call in sick? I’d most likely ask for the day off. As long as I had vacation time, that is…
Somebody tell me…should I keep the flooble up there? no one uses it. of course, no one comments here at the blog either, so I’ll be lucky if anyone tells me anything…
and now onto the Monday Mission!
1. Who are your favorite cartoon characters? Gonna be traditional and say Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Tweety too.
2. Have you yet reached the point where you feel like you are from a different generation than today’s youth? I don’t have a cell phone, so whenever I see little girls with their trendy clothes gabbing in the mall, I feel old, and I wonder what the heck their parents were thinking letting them go to the mall alone at that age, in that outfit. lol. I sound like a Girl Scout troop leader.
3. What was the first Music Video that really impressed you? What made it so amazing? You know, I honestly can’t tell you. We didn’t have MTV when I was young, but I don’t remember the early videos…it could have been A-Ha’s “Take on Me” with the live-action/animation thing, or it could maybe even have been as late as Michael Jackson’s Black or White. Have you guessed by now that I don’t remember my childhood all that much? It was happy, I know that much, but I would suck at writing an autobiography.
4. Name a song and an era that comes to mind when you hear the word “Retro.” Anything Elvis and the 50s. Even though retro clothes have progressed into the 70s 🙂
5. How has your life been affected by HIV or AIDS? Aside from learning about it and having to go through more training as a lab tech, not too much.
6. Yesterday in the USA, we celebrated “Mothers Day,” a day where we honor the mothers in our lives. If you were on a “special day” nominating committee, who or what would you recommend that we create a day in honor of? Scientists.
7. Last week, we have several Tornadoes tore through many neighborhoods, destroying homes and devastating the lives of the residents. How would you feel if you lost every possession you owned? Or would it matter? How would you go on with your life? Egad that would be a lot of possessions. I’d be pretty sad, I hate to admit it. I know we’re not supposed to value material things, but why do you think I’m such a packrat? I’d be especially sad if I lost my books, but I stopped carrying all my Moonstone stuff with me because I don’t know what I’d do if I lost my story ideas. I’d move on, but I’d always wonder a) what I lost and b) what I could have done with it.
BONUS: Do you remember the 21st night of September?
not really…occasionally I remember the 26th, but for somewhat unhappy reasons…speaking of, where oh where has my ex gone? All his emails are kaput…
I start a new job tomorrow. I have to get up so much earlier than I’ve been getting up lately…it’s almost like getting up for those track meets in college! haha. at least it’s not 4:30 am. We went car shopping today, as we as a family are in need of a new car…otherwise we’d have three working people and two cars. As Jess pointed out, that doesn’t add up. Found some nice new cars, but no purchase! lol. I might have to start taking the bus. Maybe even biking to the bus stop. Erm.
Dear God be nice to me with this new job. I’m nervous about going in and learning the new stuff…hopefully I’ll be confident enough in my abilities that I can get through this. Who knows. I could have an effect on the world.
For the people who asked me anything: As far as I know, Samantha is Orlando Bloom’s sister. Read Dreams to find out for sure. And I’ve been doing html since sophomore year of college, when I pressed the ‘convert to html’ button on one of those fill-in-the-blanks site makers. By accident or design, I’m not sure, but I did it, and realized I’d have to learn this newfangled html thing, and never looked back since. It lets me be creative and technical at the same time. I love it.
thanks for your prayers about the job sitch, guys. I know it helped. Keep your fingers crossed that it all goes ok!
Happy Mother’s day to all to whom it applies ![]()
It’s been raining oh so much. And hail! Hail in May! Sigh. I’m surprised all the flowers in our garden aren’t just so many petals on the patio. Apparently irises love lots of rain, they’ve exploded into these huge purple and white and yellow blooms all over. Pretty, but if nigh-monsoon weather is what’s needed to get them like this, I’ll pass…
I’ve been spring cleaning. My mom and I went to an antiques shop called the White Rabbit. We didn’t know where it was, and we’d watched the Matrix the night before so my mom said, Neo, can you find the white rabbit? lol. The funny thing was, we were driving and on the lookout for the store, but we didn’t see it. Finally my mom pulled into a parking lot, saying, ‘I don’t see it.’ and I said, ‘but it’s right there! I thought that’s why you turned into this lot!’ She honestly hadn’t seen the sign but turned into the right lot anyway. Follow the white rabbit indeed. I would adore seeing the Matrix on opening night…
..even though it probably won’t happen, given that it’s my first week of a new job. Hopefully I can do this one better and I won’t be expected to formulate my own experiements for some time yet. I just don’t feel like I know enough. One day, grasshopper…Dr Fontana seems pretty nice, pray that he doesn’t get fed up with slow-at-math me. He said I look smart. lol. At least I can pull that off. Wouldn’t you know the day after I accepted the job at the lab this guy from Kforce (who I’d talked to somewhere around a month ago and decided what he’d called me about needed more experience than I had) calls again, sort of out of the blue, and tells me he’d found something in the tissue engineering industry. Sigh. I know it’s still what I want to work in, someday, but not now, I suppose.
and last but not least:

Rescue me, mellon (hint: look at the ‘who’s lost’ link) Thanks ![]()
