Although he was a qualified meteorologist, Hopkins ran up a terrible record of forecasting for the TV news program. He became something of a local joke when a newspaper began keeping a record of his predictions and showed that he’d been wrong almost three hundred times in a single year. That kind of notoriety was enough to get him fired.

He moved to another part of the country and applied for a similar job. One blank on the job application called for the reason for leaving his previous position. Hopkins wrote, “The climate didn’t agree with me.”

This or That

1. Soup or salad? I can’t have both? We do at Red Lobster…more often salad, I suppose.

2. Hot or cold sandwiches? Usually cold. But a hot roast beast sandwich is mighty find.

3. White or whole wheat bread (or rye, etc)? I try to be good and have wheat.

4. Pack a lunch for work/school, or buy it? Usually packed. Occasionally went out with friends when I was working.

5. If you eat out…fast-food chain, or mom & pop type place? Er. The cafeteria across the street, usually.

6. Tuna or chicken salad? Chicken salad.

7. Cheese: Swiss or cheddar (or American, etc)? Provelone!

PromoGuy’s Monday Mission 3.09

1. Are there any television commercials on these days that are among your favorites? What is your favorite television commercial from your childhood? I really like the Lowe’s commercials, for the music. The Lincoln Navigator/Aviator-Mitsubishi Outlander commercials for the same reason. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m really into music…

2. Sometimes we see ourselves as different than we actually are. For example, I like to think I am a pretty outgoing person, but in reality, I would be perfectly happy if I were left alone. How about you? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Would others agree with you? I like to think that I could be social and outgoing but I know I’m the happiest when I’m curled up by myself reading a good book. Which I’ve been doing alot lately. I am an introvert and I believe that’s what most people would say about me…

3. What kind of a worker are you? Do you like a job where you have a daily routine that you can count on every day? Or do you prefer to be in an environment where there is constant change and you never know what to expect from one day to the next? To tell the truth I’d rather be doing something routine. They say that CSI work is really routine, so maybe I should do that 🙂 It would be cool, except for the smell…

4. I’ve found that when I go out for a business lunch or any type of meeting where you have to speak, a salad makes the best meal choice. It isn’t sloppy and makes it easy to pause for conversation. I would think the same would be true for first dates. When you’ve gone out on first dates, what sort of decisions would go into your choice of dinner? Price? Ease of conversation? The “messiness” factor? Erm. Cost. Sometimes messiness. Don’t do alot of dinner dates.

5. “It’s grouper” “Two Dollars!” “By choice, man!” The Donger

need food!” are just a few of the movie quote that I can recite off the top of my head. These (and oh so many others) come up in the most unusual and inappropriate situations. Usually no one but me “gets it.” Doesn’t matter, I

still have a good laugh. What are some of your all-time favorite movie quotes? Recently: “Asps! Very dangerous. You go first.” (Cause I just saw Raiders of the Lost Ark, which Dom quoted in the FotR SE dvd). “Indy!” “The dog? You are named after the dog?!?” “My Preciousssss.” “Crebain from Dunland!” “Le abdollen. You look terrible.” “I’ll be back.” “Run, Forrest, run!” “Jen-nay…” I’m sure there’s more that I can’t think of at this moment.

6. What if it happened. All of creation is gone. Wiped out. And then come to find out that that there is no reincarnation, no chance to live life over again, no second chance. Turned out, there really was a God and Heaven and Hell. How would that make you feel? Do you want to go to Heaven? I sure hope there’s a Heaven. I’d like to meet God. I hope He lets me in.

7. Should everyone be allowed into Heaven? Or should there be criteria? If you were making up the guest list for Heaven, how would you choose who gets in? Well, they say the list is already made. And I hate referreeing. For instance, say no killers were allowed in. Then what about the army people who kill our enemies? Or the self-defense killing? I’m glad I’m not God. I don’t know enough about the human condition to make that decision.

BONUS: Wot’s it to ya? I need a job.

Please vote. And no, I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth

So I’m trying to be a better daughter and do more about the house and be more sociable with my family. Which is seriously cutting into my internet time. I really need a job and an apartment and a car so I can just have a messy room without bothering anyone. That’s not the real reason, I know. I should just be better about helping. Or we should get cable or dsl so the phone line stays open. Whatever.
Point being I won’t be on that often. I’d love to get a new layout up for this site, start working on changing it to php, but the comp that has Dreamweaver (and more importantly, Photoshop with web-optimization) is the laptop which no longer has a working AC adapter. Ergo I can’t use it for very much longer (it’s got about an hour or so of time left in the battery) and hence can’t make up a new layout. Also can’t use it to write which sucks cause I’ve got some very good ideas that need to get written. So no moonstone until I can get a new cord. Also sucks cause I was working on a new portfolio site which I really need to get published if I’m serious about a web design job. Sigh. *crosses fingers* please someone like me enough to give me a job.
btw, happy 03-03-03 wink

Friday Five

This week, a topic near and dear to my heart 🙂

1. What is your favorite type of literature to read (magazine, newspaper, novels, nonfiction, poetry, etc.)? Fiction, by a landslide. It’s my escape.

2. What is your favorite novel? I could never name just one. Current favorite is probably Narcissus in Chains by Laurell K Hamilton.

3. Do you have a favorite poem? (Share it!) The Road Less Travelled, by Robert Frost. It’s already been shared somewhere in this blog.

4. What is one thing you’ve always wanted to read, or wish you had more time to read? I wish I could get into scientific journals better. I mean, I read them, but fiction is just so much more fun…

5. What are you currently reading? I went on a book buying spree last week. Just finished a Christeen Feehan book, and about to move onto Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy 🙂

Did you know, etc

The Origins of Mardi Gras
Though New Orleans is the city most commonly associated with the Mardi Gras celebration in America, many historians believe that the festival actually originated in nearby Mobile, Alabama.
The celebration, which can be dated back to 1703 in Mobile, was originally called Boef Gras (Fat Beef). The name changed to “Fat Tuesday” as it became a widely known festival in the 1830s and 1840s.
The date of Mardi Gras depends on the date of Easter. Mardi Gras takes place the day before Ash Wednesday, which begins the 40-day season of Lent before Easter. “Fat Tuesday” is the last day to celebrate before the season of discipline and contemplation that leads up to Easter Sunday.
This year, Mardi Gras will be celebrated on March 4.

Still a little sick, but muchos better than I was. Quite peeved because the AC adapter for my laptop is broken, so no power to the laptop, and not that much power left on it cause I didn’t realize it was losing power cause the darn thing was plugged in. Sheesh. Peevish cause a new one costs $65 unless you can find them on eBay which I’ll probably do. Even if I get a new comp I’d have to get a new cord so I could have enough power to transfer the stuff over. Bleh.
Bookbuying spree today…and Clinique spree…freebies my butt. Ah well.
Mom was seriously angry with me this morning and yesterday. She wants me to move out. As soon as I get a job, of course. Apparently I’m hard to be around. Now, don’t take this the wrong way. I probably *should* move out, it would be better for all involved. It’s just that she’s sick, she’s got this disease which could and probably will kill her unless it gets under control. She gets angry easily which isn’t good for her. And I just don’t know what to do cause whatever I do seems to be the wrong thing.
To be clear: I’m not getting kicked out, or disowned or anything. It’s just that it’s getting harder to stay at home. We’re all under too much stress.
I don’t want to air too much dirty laundry here. It’s not something that y’all should be worried about. I don’t really want people sending me emails or commenting on how you hope she feels better and that I’ll find a job or whatever. I just thought I should let you know why I haven’t been around lately.
That’s all. Bowl…

This or That

1. Holland or Netherlands? Probably Netherlands, although I’m not sure I’ve ever actually used it either way.

2. Emu or Ostrich? Um. Ostrich?

3. Biff or Happy? Happy. Biff will forever be the guy from Back to the Future.

4. Quincy or Braintree? I have no idea what this refers to, but I’ve known some cool Quincys in my track time so we’ll go with that.

5. Cassius Clay or Muhammad Ali? I like Muhummad. Sort of rolls off the tongue.

6. Istanbul or Constantinople? Constantinople. Cause it’s just so much fun to say.

7. Pig or Swine? Hmm. Pig. I’m not high-class.

8. Barf or Puke? ew. why do all the words for vomit sound almost as bad as the action itself? Er. Answered my own question.

9. Potatoes or Spuds? What’s taters, precious, eh what’s taters? Po-tae-toes!

10. Squeeze Box or Accordion? Accordion, je suppose.

PromoGuy’s Monday Mission 3.08

1. Has anyone ever told you that you needed to lose weight or change something about yourself physically? Who told you and what impact did it have on your life? Your perception of yourself? I tell myself I should lose weight all the time. I’m too lazy to do anything about it, of course, except when you get a rude awakening like trying on a swim suit…I’ve been lucky. None of my friends, no coach or parent ever told me that I looked bad at my weight. And I run, so while it’s nice to have less weight to drag you when you sprint, muscles weigh more than fat. Go muscles.

2. Do enjoy the snow and cold weather? I do, when I can go out sledding…

3. Visualize the perfect winter evening. Are you alone or with someone? How does the evening start? How does it end, and everything in-between. Fireplace with someone to cuddle, after a day of sledding or skiing…hot chocolate. cabin in the woods. smiles and eskimo kisses. I have no idea how it would end. Hopefully happily.

4. I’ve noticed that people I work with, even no more than 6 feet away, would rather e-mail me a message than turn around and speak to me. Same goes for voice mail, I find I get more calls when I am away than when I am available to speak to someone. So many things that could be said face-to-face are now accomplished electronically. Do you think that technology has had

allowed relationships and human interaction to become less personal? Is this a good thing?
Yes, we’re all less personal. But I saw a commercial the other day about how this guy could reach all these people by email or phone but his smile hasn’t lost a client yet. Sometimes you just gotta get out there and be there in person. Of course, I get really nervous when I have to be somewhere in person and for some reason I hate using the phone, so email is a nice safe haven for me…

5. One thing I’ve always wanted to learn is how to juggle. I’m pretty good with my hands, so I am sure I could do it. Yet, I’ve never made the commitment to sit down and learn how. Is there anything you’ve been meaning to learn, that you can learn, but haven’t? (or maybe you have?) *ahem* guitar? spanish and chinese. sewing.

6. On the other side of the coin, there is photography. As much as I’d like to, I will never be as great at it as others. And I am OK with that, still I wish I had the gifts that others have. What skills or talents have you wished that you possessed that you most likely never will? Are you content with that? Better web design skills. I saw the website of one of my college roommates yesterday, and she started off like me but ended up doing what I wanted to do. Sigh. Spilled milk I suppose. I just have to find better ways of combining my interests.

7. “AudioBlogs” are a twist on text blogs, where the blogger posts audio files instead of writing their entries. Not far behind the curve are VideoBlogs. While I’ve tinkered with Audio posts before, I think it excludes too many people and personally, I feel the written word has a deeper impact. What do you think of the concept of “AudioBlogs?” Would you like to hear the voice of your favorite bloggers occasionally? Would you rather listen to or read your favorite Blogs? It’s exciting to hear the voices of people you’ve only read about. I’d love to listen to them, but silly things like modems don’t even like streams of audio, so it’d be pretty hard for me to get any of them. I really have a pet peeve of sites that have midis or embedded mp3s in them, cause it slows down the computer something fierce. So while it’s nice to hear someone’s voice, until broadband is cheap, it will be impratical.

BONUS: How deep is your love? Well, it used to be pretty deep. Haven’t had anyone to try it out on in a while.
